TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)
What Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment for depression, especially for individuals who have not experienced enough relief from medication. TMS uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Treatments are done in-office, do not require anesthesia, and allow you to return to your normal activities immediately afterward.
Who is a good candidate?
TMS may be a good option if you’ve tried antidepressant medications with limited benefit or unwanted side effects, or if you’re looking for a non-medication-based treatment for depression.
Insurance & cost:
Most major insurance plans, including Medicare, cover TMS for qualifying patients. Our team will verify benefits and walk you through coverage and any out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins.
FAQ: What does TMS feel like?
Most patients describe TMS as a tapping sensation on the scalp. It is generally well tolerated, and sessions are brief and monitored closely by trained clinical staff.

What to Expect During a NeuroStar® TMS Treatment Course
Your mapping session (first visit):
Your first NeuroStar® TMS visit is called a mapping session and typically lasts about 45–60 minutes. During this appointment, your provider carefully identifies the exact area of your brain involved in mood regulation and determines the right treatment settings for you. This process is personalized and non-invasive, and it helps ensure your treatments are both safe and effective. You may feel light tapping on your scalp during this visit, similar to regular treatment sessions.
Your treatment sessions (35 follow-up visits):
After mapping, you’ll begin a course of approximately 35 treatment sessions, usually scheduled five days per week. Each NeuroStar® TMS session lasts about 20 minutes. During treatment, you’ll sit comfortably while gentle magnetic pulses are delivered. You remain awake, alert, and able to resume normal activities immediately afterward—there’s no downtime or sedation.
Over the course of the 35 sessions, many patients notice gradual improvements in mood, energy, sleep, and motivation. Progress is monitored regularly, and your care team will support you throughout the entire course to ensure the best possible outcome.
FAQ: What if the treatment feels uncomfortable or needs adjustment?
NeuroStar® treatments can be adjusted at any time for comfort. Your care team will check in with you frequently and make changes as needed.
